Perlite partial substitution of Kieselguhr for beer filtration

Abstract

In comparison with kieselguhr, perlite has advantages. Higher wet volume, higher permeability and lower filter aid consumption, an some disadvantages: limited application, higher transport costs and lower clarifiying effect. Three full scale trials were conducted with perlite partial substitution of kieselguhr for beer filatration. Inclusion of 30 % perlite into the first coarse kieselguhr precoat leads to the creation of a more stable filter cake with improved clarity efficiency. This effect can be achieved with up to 30 % lower kieseguhr dosage for body-feed.
